Here is a complete landscaping project utilising a variety of hard and soft landscaping services. This complete garden makeover was for a return customer in Wyken in Coventry who we did a resin drive for a couple of years ago. The customer allowed us to design the project and couldn't be happier with the finish and the efforts by everyone involved.
We ripped out the old fencing, decking, fish pond and patio amongst other things. Then we installed a retaining wall at the far end of the garden and doubled up on all of the gravel boards, which allowed us to level the garden up. We used a kandla grey large format porcelain paving, with a manhattan grey grout. We also installer pencil edge charcoal pavers along with sections of black ice decorative stone. Installed Grange Espirit fencing into new concrete posts with rock faced gravel boards. We also made and installed a selection of reclaimed sleeper box planters and replaced the existing grass with new Rolawn medallion natural turf. The new decking was anthracite composite decking with a charcoal bullnose border.
Whilst not everyone will want a complete new garden landscape if there are aspects here which inspire some changes for your garden - please get in touch, no matter how small.

For comprehensive garden makeovers it makes sense to have your landscape garden designed first. It will be a reasonable investment so it is important for you to know what you are aiming for and what this will look like. A landscape design also provide our landscapers with a precise plan of what you want where and also provides a valuable project map as we will know how to prioritise and order the work to get the best results with minimal disruption. Not all landscaping work will require a garden design plan especially if you already know exactly what you want where. These become most useful for new home owners who have a blank canvas and allows initial concepts to be adjusted on paper which is much more cost effective than changing plans during the build!
Whether you want to carry out a major new garden project or simply feel the need to replace an existing hard scape structure we can take on both small and large jobs. Whether we need to bring in excavators or simply bend our backs we can renew, replace or install a wide variety of hard landscaping structures. We can discuss material options and advice on what the best maintenance and cleaning processes will help keep your hard landscaping items looking good and lasting long.
By using our knowledge and experience of hard landscaping material we can create different style of garden including contemporary, rustic styles and even Japanese style gardens. Our contemporary hard landscaping would include materials such as Italian porcelain paving, an artificial lawn, composite decking, and perhaps a resin bound patio. For sloping gardens following ground excavation installation of a retaining wall can add massive character.
Hard landscaping components provide an extremely low maintenance garden. Rustic style will include more products such as timber decking, sandstone or slate patios and paving and the use of timber sleepers for borders and raised beds.
At DNA Landscapes we can provide an extensive number of options when it comes to making some significant changes to your garden's landscape. Typically it will involve adding a new pathway or patio or even installing artificial grass as a full or partial replacement to your turf lawn. As some of these works involve groundwork machines it can also include the installation of a new driveway and include any associate walls, whether they be a retaining wall or simply a wall to mark a boundary line.
Hard landscaping will include work such as installing a new fence, adding or replacing existing decking. Whether you want several of these items installed or just one or two, we are equally happy to discuss them with you and ensure that your front or back garden project is completed to our exacting standards.
As landscape gardeners we install many patios as part of our of our landscaping services and often installing a new or replacement patio is one of the most common stand alone landscaping projects we carry out. Depending on the size and slope of the ground this can be a simple or quite a major projects depending on how much earth needs moving or 'removing' in order to create a flat area big enough for the patio area you want.
A very common accompaniment to a new patio will be steps taking you to the higher level, which will generally be the only gap in a retaining garden wall that has been constructed to support the higher level of ground that has been left following excavation. Whilst this isn't the cheapest of activities the finished results from multi-level gardens provides an exceptional landscape as different levels all for variety and versatility within your garden which is why many people will search for a landscaper to carry out a patio installation.
Whether your landscaping requires a retaining wall or simply a wall we can construct these to match your landscape design. Choosing the right bricks and also the right topping can make quite an impact on whether your wall simply provides a function or whether it can add to the landscaping. A top layer of blue, or different coloured brick or apex coving will make a difference. Sometimes a wall can simply be used as part of the landscape design ether to provide segregation or simply break up an area. Gabion garden walls are a good option for this and green, living walls are also becoming on trend.
When it comes to a retaining wall again options such as the material used, the colour or colours of that material and height and shape make a big difference - a wall doesn't have to be straight, it can curve or wave around an area. For further information click on our retaining walls page.
Real grass turf installation is another service provided by us. Quite often when we install a new patio it will lead on to or have parts enclosed by a lawn which is an essential process for creating a beautiful and functional outdoor space. Whether it is for a residential lawn, a sports field, or a commercial landscape, fitting new grass turf provides numerous benefits. Firstly, it enhances the overall aesthetics of the area by providing a lush, green, and uniform appearance. Additionally, new turf provides a soft and safe surface for various activities, such as playing games or hosting outdoor events. It also helps in preventing soil erosion and controlling the temperature of the surrounding area. Moreover, turf installation provides a useable area much quicker then sowing grass seeds, so you can start making best use of your lawn much sooner.
Whether we are installing a new patio - or a replacement this can often involve changing it's position, size and what paving slabs are used to create the look you're after. It's not unusual for some of out patio work to be done over two or even three levels where each can change in size and create and inviting route to another area of the garden using a pathway to get there. We can install any paving material such as concrete, marble, Indian stone, porcelain, slate, granite, limestone, sandstone. Due to the variation in porosity between different slab materials means that the right adhesives need to be used for the right material. Our patio work is finished to the highest standard all of which can also be edged of with a retaining wall, raised beds or a simple row of block paving to frame the patio.
A good quality garden fence provides the background and border to a landscape project. There are so many different fences available these days you may struggle to decide on which to go for but as with anything budget will also play a part. The type of fencing or rather than material for garden fences that we have seen grow the most in recent years is composite fencing. It's low maintenance and is in keeping with a contemporary garden which has been designed to minimise maintenance and maximise on visual impact. There are different types available and most come with their own matching fence posts but there are also some that can fit into existing concrete posts. These provide a good option to have a low maintenance fence whilst keeping costs down.
Wooden fences still remain the most common but slatted, hit and miss and the use of trellis' can provide an excellent looking fence which can blend in well with trees, plants and shrubs.
Regardless of the type of fence you're after we can install a fence to match your garden design. Whilst traditionally the most popular choice is wood, which still remains the cheapest option there are many types of wooden panels and the choice here can influence the effectiveness in creating the background framing of your garden and we can definitely assist with that.
Growing in popularity is composite fencing and PVC fencing. These options require little to no maintenance so fit the bill for a contemporary modern gardens. They come in a variety of styles and colours. Metal fencing is also an option but from an aesthetic perspective the use of metal railing in front gardens, often added on top of a brick wall is where they provide the most benefit in terms of practicality and allowing yourselves and passers by to look into your garden so you can showcase your properties enhanced kerb appeal. For more detailed information on fencing options have a look at our garden fencing page.
Decking is following fencing with more and more composite decking being installed compared to a few years ago. Wooden decking just like wooden fence still continues to be the most common deck option simply due to cost but where budget allows most people will want the low maintenance decking that composite deck boards provide.
A full composite decking system will cost quite a bit more than a d timber one due to the use of aluminium and solid composite framing and the use of special clips to attach the boards. However, a good compromise on price is to use a timber frame and fit composite boards on top of that. Proper timber joists could last up to 20 years and in a number of instances if your existing decking structure is in a strong we can install composite boards on that for a cheap composite decking solution. Simply get in touch to arrange a survey.
Whilst we are sometime asked whether or not to choose over paving over decking we don't see this as a straight forward either or question. In fact for a number of landscape projects combining the two provides variety and additional interest and perspectives to a garden as well as providing defined spaces for certain activities.
Whilst timber decking still out sells composite decking the gap is closing and many full landscaping projects, especially contemporary modern designed ones will include an area of composite decking.
Decking can be a cheaper option if you are just looking to include one entertaining area and have a steep sloping garden as decking can be built on a raised frame whereas a patio would require ground excavation to create a flat foundation base.
It's not surprising that artificial grass is frequently specified as part of a landscape design to maintain a contemporary low maintenance garden that will look good for most of the year rather than just spring and summer.
Whilst there can be arguments both for and against the replacement of real grass for a synthetic one we take the view that it should be up to the homeowner to decide on what they want for their garden.
Artificial grass can make a big positive lifestyle change especially for dog owners and we've never replaced a real lawn for a complete artificial lawn. There are always borders for plants, trees and shrubs to encourage bee, bird and insect life and not having to mow lawn provides gardens more time to focus on this aspect of their garden rather than a mundanely mowing a lawn.
Artificial grass can sometime be a little controversial with many nature fans feeling that adding a synthetic material to your garden isn't very green. However, once laid an artificial lawn does not require watering, feeding or maintaining using harsh chemicals found in weed and moss killers so the argument is not so straight forward. What we have seen is that many artificial lawn owners spend more time introducing bee and insect enticing plants, shrubs and flowers in their borders as a result of not having to spend garden time trying to keep a lawn looking green and healthily throughout a long hot summer. Artificial grass definitely has a place in modern landscaping and can also be used in part along with purpose created wild grass and flower areas.
Whilst most people will use the phrase soft landscaping avid gardeners will tend to use the phrase softscaping - both mean exactly the same thing.
We provide softscaping as part of our total landscaping service.
As well as providing tips and guidance on the types of tree, plants and shrubs which may work well with your chosen landscape design we can plant these for you too so that when we leave you have your landscape garden complete and ready to enjoy straight away.

Soft landscaping is a catch all phrase which refers to all living aspects of a garden so would include grasses, fruit and veg, trees, plants and flowers. There is also some debate as to whether this also include the ongoing management on these things such as pruning, moving, fertilising and watering.
From our perspective we focus on the initial set up so our soft landscaping service will include planting. Ongoing maintenance would be done by a garden services company who will do cover most of the garden maintenance services mentioned and possibly some planting too.
For a complete garden transitions as well hard landscaping we will also provide a soft landscaping service too, so that your garden is almost the finished article. We say 'almost' as we know that as a garden is a leaving entity as plants, shrubs and trees grow you may decide that you want to move some plants around as they mature and you want certain new plants you buy in certain locations.
We will help with our knowledge of trees and shrubs and we can lay new turf as part of our soft scaping service too.
Decisions regarding soft scaping will depend on a variety of factors. Aspects such as person preference on favourite plants and trees will always come into the equation and more often than not can be included. The art in in deciding where to place certain trees and plants.
As most gardeners will know certain trees, plants and flowers prefer certain conditions otherwise they will struggle to grow and bloom to the best of their ability. Factors such as the soil, its water drainage and the amount of sunlight a plant will be subjected to can make a dramatic difference.
Whilst trees are generally more hardy than plants and shrubs the proximity of trees to hard landscaping structures and other plants can impact aspects of your landscape in a few years time as a tree and its roots begin to grow. As well as pointing out some of these potential issues we will also inspect your ground quality and especially if your ground is clay base will discuss how our garden drainage solutions will be able to help with the quality and variety of plants, which you can grow in your garden. The other option is to use pots which can also add character and versatility to your garden. These are great for allowing you to make some changes in the future as some potted plants may still grow substantially and warrant repositioning, or simply allow you to find the spot where it grows best.
The different landscape options whilst influenced by hard landscaping should provide some guidance on where to go with soft landscaping when following a landscape design theme.
Both Mediterranean and Japanese gardens would typically include some water. Mediterranean with a reasonably sized pond, whilst Japanese style should feature a stream that could run into a very petite pond which would include water lilies. The use of Acers and flowering trees having an abundance of blossom along with grasses and bamboo will instantly say 'Japanese Garden'.
For cottage and natural themes the use of native English plants including fruit trees such as apple, elderberry and can feature along with coloured shrubs such as heather and lavender amongst a rockery. A section or boarder including Herbaceous plants will can also include some herbs will provide sensory spaces.
Contemporary modern also provide some non native large trees and plant bringing striking foliage to the garden. Plants in pots will maintain a feeling of neatness along with some self contained water feature unless you want to 'splash out' on a rain garden!
Whether you simply have issues with your garden getting waterlogged in places or simply want to plan your garden maintenance at the initial stage of a full landscaping project we can help create an irrigation platform for you plants or ensure that if you have poor drainage that we provide a drainage solution that will allow you to plant certain plants in certain areas of your garden and not worry about them drowning following a spell of wet weather.
If your garden is predominantly on clay soil you are more likely to have drainage issues and if you have noticed puddles on your lawn taking a long time to go away this will be a good indicator.
With more people appreciating and enjoying outdoor space and nature in their gardens more people are looking to include a permanent garden structure of some sort. The most popular being wooden gazebos, pergolas and arbours. We can make any of these structures to suit your requirements, so you have total flexibility on the size, positioning and style you want. These structure provide an excellent visual aspect to a garden as well as providing a shelter under which a bench or chars can be placed to enjoy your garden.
They can also provide the means for climbers to envelope the structure to blend into your garden if that is the look you are after
As well as back gardens our groundwork expertise also extends to front gardens. Many front gardens will have a driveway and this area can determine the image of your front garden and overall perception of your property, at a glance. Depending on the size and shape of your front garden a driveway can be the most prominent aspect of your property so it makes sense for this to have kerb appeal.
We pride ourselves on being able to offer any type of driveway in Coventry including tarmac, gravel, imprinted concrete, block paving, cobbles and resin. We have an eye for which driveway type may visually work well in your garden and by being able to offer these alternatives we won't push you down any particular style unless it's what you want and have budgeted for.
We have more than 40 years combined experience in creating beautiful landscape gardens.
We focus on landscaping projects since that is our passion. We treat every job as though it is our own garden and have been selected by major housebuilders to manage the landscaping for their show homes throughout Coventry.
Insure to £1,000,000 we meet the highest local and regional standards, and use only certified products.

We aim for your landscape project to run smoothly and be signed off on time and within budget.
A creative hardscaping theme with a hint of the Mediterranean, using modern porcelains, shaded
seating areas, decorative gravels and drought-tolerant plants such as blue fescue and the torbay
palm are our most popular landscape styles.
Here at DNA Landscapes we cover a wide variety of landscaping projects, but the most common
hardscaping enquiries are for a contemporary, low maintenance garden. Using porcelain and
composite products which while very hard wearing and durable, produce fresh, clean lines requiringvery little maintenance.
My personal favourite is the quintessential English courtyard garden. Using yorkstone natural paving
for the main seating area, bordered with reclaimed brick planters filled with plants inviting the pollinators into the space, such as snapdragons, sunflowers and the classic daisy (a favourite of my
daughters) winding clay pavers paths which invite you past bold water features to a secret seating
area where nature can be taken in and enjoyed.
For privacy hedges the classic English yew tree or the black Thorne (with the possibility of making
your own sloe gin using the black-purple fruits)
A crab apple tree offers a good source of early pollen from its pink/white blossom and your chance to chance your arm at a crab apple jelly, perfect with slow roast pork.
For planters, I would look to hardy flowering perennials such as hydrangea or geraniums mixed with seasonal bedding plants to give an immediate show of colour.
Many full garden landscaping projects will involve installing some paving or patio are with a pathway. This often will come with installing a retaining wall and moving of earth leading to the fitting or new plant bedding areas. As far as stand alone landscaping jobs we do many garden fences and artificial grass installations too.
We enjoy every aspect of our work but fi we were going to pick:
Ian loves carrying out patio and paving jobs. Darren really enjoys manufuring and installing wooden garden structures and fencing. Myself and Steph enjoy the design aspects and then making it all fall into place.
Porcelain paving, grey in particular, is being requested the most followed by Indian stone.
Yes they certainly are. Any wood garden structure can add charm and practicality to a garden. The key is to ensure you have the right size garden structure, positioned in the right place.
Magnolias and Japanese maple trees (Acers) continue to be popular along with the Japanese cherry blossom tree. Silver Birches and Rowan are also common choices in larger gardens.
Certain fir trees are suited for woodlands not domestic gardens as they can pose a serious risk to your property if uprooted by severe gales.
As landscape gardeners in Coventry we have shown above that we provide a wide variety or services and we have experts within our team to ensure each discipline is covered off as good as any individual contractor who may just focus on driveways, patios, artificial grass, decking or fencing - so if you simply need a new fence for your garden rather than a full garden landscaping project - that's fine we're happy to come and do that for you and if you want to discuss some of your garden plans for the future we're happy to listen and possibly chip in with some suggestions too.

“We have hired Andy a couple of times now to carry out work on our garden and his Landscaping skills are second to none.
Really helped us in designing what we wanted for the garden and the best way to get it looking exactly the way we wanted.
The work carried out is to a very high standard and communication along the way until the work is completed is fantastic.
Andy and his team are very hard working and deliver to the expected standard.
Would more than happy to use or recommend Andy and his team for any Landscaping Services in the future.”
Dave Jones - Rugby
“We chose Andy Lyden and his team following a recommendation from a friend of ours. After meeting Andy and discussing our project, we had no hesitation in booking him for our job.
It was clear to us that Andy had a great deal of civil engineering and landscaping experience and really understood what we wanted. He gave us some great advice too – about material choices and about where and how to save some money on what was a large-scale block paving project.
Andy set out his costs and his project plan in a clear and understandable way and started our job exactly on time. He arrived on time every day and his team were courteous, tidy and respectful of our neighbours – all of which was important to us. He delivered our project exactly on time and at the cost that we had agreed – no hidden extra’s, no tricks of the trade, just a great job at a fair price.
And we couldn’t be happier with the finished job! It looks fabulous! Better than we could ever have hoped for! Thank you, Andy!
We wouldn’t hesitate in recommending Andy Lyden and his team of landscaping contractors at
DNA Landscapes.”
Nic Rae - Bindley Woods, Coventry
“We decided to contact DNA Landscaping Coventry on Facebook as they had been recommended by our friends so we gave Andy a call as we wanted our garden doing for the summer and wanted a local tradesman. Andy came round the house and we went through what we wanted and he said no problem, actually beating other quotes that we had. Andy kept in constant communication throughout the work, checking in with us to make sure all the materials and layout was what we wanted. Everything was done to the highest quality, from removing the existing grass and tiles to laying down the foundations, artificial grass and porcelain tiles. Andy and his team were hardworking and made sure all the rubbish was removed at the end. I would definitely use DNA Landscapes Coventry again. Absolute 5 start job, thanks!!“
Kriss Williams - Coventry
“We used Andy and his team last spring to totally revamp our garden.
We provided Andy with a plan and he was very thorough in his measuring and planning before the work began. Communicating clearly with us as required.
Andy and his team worked extremely hard, even in the snow; remained faithful to our plan and produced work to a high standard.
The work was competitively priced and we are really pleased with the end result. We have had lots of complements about our garden and definitely recommend Andy to others.”
Neil and Linda - Coventry
“Andy and co did our driveway and back garden.
Our drive is huge and they did the most amazing job. Always turned up on time, more importantly kept excellent communication before, during and after. Very reliable, genuine and honest lads who were an absolute pleasure to work with. Very tidy workers too. It was worth the wait too. Cannot recommended this company enough.”
Joanna Jones - Rugby
“During lockdown 2020, our garden was looking really tired and we thought about giving it a look over. We contacted Andy who was very patient, visiting us several times to give us valuable ideas. He and his team started work in Feb 2021 and the work was fantastic. His team even adapted when we decided to add a gazebo to the garden. He coordinated work with our electrician so our garden can have the look and feel we wanted. Overall, we are well pleased with the work. All the members of the team are very nice and we never felt uncomfortable. I can fully recommend Andy and his landscaping team. In fact, we will be calling him when we have new work to be done.”
