As landscapers our eye for detail, shapes and structures means we are ideally placed to hands all your decking requirements.
Whilst there are less material choices with decking than other hardscaping options there are still a number of considerations that will mean that you will have created a decking area rather than a fantastic decking are which combines functionality, practicality and aesthetics.
Grey composite decking with matching composite balustrades
New, or replacement garden decking in Coventry has been a frequent part of our landscaping work and will continue to do so.
With so many garden plots being set on hillsides a deck are in your garden provides and excellent place to set your garden furniture and relax.
We can build decking frame work structures which can compensate for steep slopes to provide you with a fantastic vantage point over the rest of your garden without having to excavate large areas of your garden at significant cost and dispution.
We almost always get asked to provide a comparison price for composite decking along with timber decking as it is the more desired form of decking if the budget allows it. There are less and less people wanting to spend time and effort cleaning down timber decking, staining or oiling it year after year and for the decking to look weathered, even if looked after well. Whilst there used to be a big price difference between timber and composite decking the gap is starting to close as timber prices rise disproportionately against timber. There is still a difference but many more people are willing to stretch their budgets that bit more to get the benefits of composite decking.
If doing a full garden landscaping project marching composite decking to the composite fencing provide a clean coordinate look and works really well. The most popular composite decking colour is grey followed by a brown and then beige shades. Many composite decking features wood effect graining so maintains a more traditional look but with sharper more vivid colours.
When it comes to composite decking installations we can provide some cost savings by installing composite boards on top of a timber frame as the timber frame will last many years at least 10, and you will still be able to benefit from the low maintenance composite boards on top.
However, fitting on a timber frame will mean attching the composite boards the same as you would softwood baords. For a full composite decking installation most manufacturers will have a fixing system that utilises clips to holf the boards onto the frame from underneath which means that you will have no unsightly screws visible when standing on your decking. These frames are often composite (or UPVC) or aluminum of have elements of both which does ad significantly to the overall material cost. However, not many composite decking installers have the experience of fitting a complete composite decking structure to give the best possible finish. Here is a recent job we completed for a customer in Wyken, Coventry using anthracite grey composite decking with a charcoal bullnose border for a clean finish. Please get in touch with us if you are looking for specialist composite decking installers in Coventry.

Whilst timber decking is less desired it still is the most popular for installation and replacement based on price. However, it is important to point out that the cheaper timber decking pricing relates to softwood timber which can be found at most timber merchants and many DIY stores. Softwood comes from trees such pine and spruce which are fast growing and therefore more sustainable and undergo the same pressure treatment as timber fencing.
For a more expensive option, more expensive than composite, some people will choose a hard wood timber decking. This will include wood from native trees such as ash and oak but their availability is very limited so most hardwood such as ipe, teak and balua will be imported. These are extremely hard, as the name suggests, and are inherently resistant to decay, which is why they too are a low maintenance option - naturally. They are premium products and have limited availability and size options from specialist timber merchants but they are a stunning decking option.
Whilst the two main components of a deck area are the deck boards and the frame you can make your deck space a more interesting, appealing and more practical with some additional items. The main ones being decking balustrades and deck lights.
Deck balustrades refer to the railing structure which can surround your decking area fully or run along selected sides. For raised decking this becomes an important safety feature and for a commercial premises a raised decking area must have strong safe balustrades. Often bars or cafes which have a decking area will enclose it with stainless steel or aluminium balustrade posts with safety glass running in between them. This is a very clean and modern look and also works well with composite garden decking. For lower level residential decking wooden balustrades are the norm.
Depending on the position and layout of your decking you may also want to include deck spotlights, down lights and up lights. Up lights are most popular with decking. Fitted to shine up through the deck boards and providing guidance along decking steps they provide a practical and sometimes magical effect as night time draws in.
DNA Landscapes has been installing decking for many years. We have experience in creating
timeless classic timber decks using colonial spindles and fillet hand rails to create beautiful
balustrades, through to modern composite and PVC’s fixed to aluminum frameworks and pedestals.
The highest deck install would be around 600mm from ground level using 4-inch timber posts and
6x1 joists as a structural framework
Browns, charcoals, honeys (or beige) and reds are popular composite decking colourways aside from the ever-popular grey.
Brown hues, in particular, are effective for composite decking as they deliver a more rustic feel with their more natural-looking grains.
This will depend on the type of finish you want since there are now many colour options to use as an alternative to enhancing the wood using a natural clear option such as an oil. We would, however, always recommend using a branded product rather than a cheaper own-brand alternative
